Self Rating Guide

When entering your self rating a good rule of thumb is to use the level you'd sign up for if you were to enter a tournament. If you have not had to rate yourself before, you're probably between 2.0 - 3.0.
2.0 (Beginner)
You are just getting started and are playing strictly for fun. You are learning scoring and your main goal is to get the ball over the net and in bounds.
2.5 (Advanced beginner)
You have mastered scoring and are able to get the ball over the net and in bounds on serves and during play, though not reliably. You're not a total beginner, but still have a lot to learn.
3.0 (Low intermediate)
You are thinking more about strategy and are able to place the ball close to where you want it to go. You have a decent serve and you can sustain a rally.
3.5 (Intermediate)
You understand strategy, get to the kitchen quickly, and vary your shots. You have a good serve and use 3rd shot drops and dinks, even if you have not mastered these yet.
4.0 (Low Advanced)
You have mastered most shots (forehands, backhands, overheads) and can place your serves and returns. You strategically choose shots and can control the pace of the game with speed ups, drops, and can sustain both dink rallys and hands battles. You rarely pop balls up and can hit angles and shots down the line. You're aware of your partner's position, move with them, and together can cover most shots.
4.5 (Advanced)
You have mastered all shots, are very consistent, and rarely make mistakes. You can anticipate your opponents moves and have great court positioning. You control your shots with power, spin, and choose the right time to speed up the ball. You're very in sync with your partner, know when to poach, and rarely let a ball get past you.
5.0+ (High Advanced / Pro)
Most players do not make it to this level. If you're a 5.0, you'll know.
